The Shift-Work Back

The caseload around Westgate is shaped by the work here: hospitality, events, retail, warehousing, construction. A lot of standing, a lot of lifting, and shifts that do not respect the idea of a recovery schedule.

The classic presentation is a low back that has been complaining for months and then failed properly during an ordinary lift. The failure is what brings people in; the months are what actually need addressing.

The second presentation is the overhead shoulder — years of reaching above head height, gradually losing range, until something acute happens. Both are examinable, both are treatable, and both do far better when they are looked at before the acute episode rather than after.

Examination First

Range of motion, orthopaedic testing, neurological screening where symptoms travel into an arm or leg.

What the examination separates: a joint restriction that manual work resolves, from a disc under load, from a nerve root with genuine neurological findings, from something that should not be adjusted at all. If imaging should come first, we say so.

You are examined before you are adjusted. That should be unremarkable and frequently is not.

Techniques

Diversified manual adjustment. Instrument-assisted adjustment where a manual thrust is not wanted or not appropriate. Drop-table technique. Flexion-distraction for disc-related low back pain. Soft-tissue and myofascial work — often the highest-value part of the visit for someone whose problem is accumulated load rather than a single injury. Home exercise, kept realistic.

Hydration Is Not a Throwaway Line

In a Glendale summer, chronic mild dehydration is close to universal among people working outdoors or in and out of air conditioning all day, and it makes muscular pain, cramping and spasm measurably worse.

We raise it because it is one of the few genuinely easy variables in a caseload where most of the variables are not adjustable. If your symptoms are worse in July than February, say so.

What We Treat

Low back pain including disc and facet joint problems. Neck pain and cervicogenic headache. Sciatica and radiating leg pain. Mid and upper back pain from driving and desk work. Whiplash and other car accident injuries. Shoulder, hip and knee complaints. Work and sports injuries.

When It Is Not Chiropractic

Maegan Kitzmann, PA-C and Nicholas Taylor, PA-C provide pain management in this clinic.

So when the examination finds something manual care will not fix, the referral is internal — same building, same chart, no repeat intake, no month of waiting.
