Adjusting an Older Spine Is Not the Same Job
This catchment skews considerably older than the Valley average, and that changes chiropractic practice in ways worth being explicit about.
A seventy-five-year-old spine with established degenerative change, possible osteoporosis and a history of surgery is not treated the way a thirty-year-old's is. High-velocity manual thrusting may be entirely inappropriate. Screening for bone density risk, vascular considerations and prior fusion matters before anyone touches anything.
That is not a reason to avoid chiropractic care in later life — mobility, joint restriction and soft-tissue work all still respond. It is a reason to be examined properly first, and to be treated by someone who will use a gentler technique when a gentler technique is what is called for.
Instrument-Assisted and Low-Force Options
We use instrument-assisted adjustment, drop-table technique and mobilisation as well as traditional manual adjustment. For many patients here, the low-force options are the appropriate ones rather than the fallback.
If you have been told you are too old for chiropractic, or you have been put off by the idea of being manipulated, this is worth a conversation. What you are picturing is not the only thing on offer.
Examination First
Range of motion, orthopaedic testing, neurological screening where symptoms travel into an arm or leg, and a careful history of prior surgery, fractures and bone health.
The examination decides whether this is a joint restriction that will respond to manual work, a stenosis picture that needs a different approach entirely, a nerve root under genuine pressure, or something that should not be adjusted.
What We See
Low back pain and stiffness. Neck pain and the headaches that come from the upper cervical joints. Sciatica and leg pain — with the important distinction between disc-related pain and stenosis, which behave differently and need treating differently. Shoulder, hip and knee complaints. Arthritic joint pain and the movement loss that follows it. Whiplash and other car accident injuries.
