About

About Breanna Valentine

Dr. Breanna Valentine earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Northern Arizona University in Phoenix, Arizona, after completing her Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology at Arizona State University. She enjoys treating a wide variety of orthopedic conditions and is committed to providing individualized, evidence-based care that helps patients improve function, reduce pain, and achieve their personal goals. In her free time, Brea enjoys thrifting, attending country concerts, and living an active lifestyle.

Clinical focus

What evidence-based care means from the patient’s chair

Brea describes her practice as evidence-based, and it is worth translating that from the inside. It means the treatment you get is the one with support behind it for your problem, that you should be told why it was chosen, and that when something is not working after a fair trial the plan changes rather than continuing out of momentum. It also means a certain amount of measuring, because without a baseline there is no honest way to tell whether the last four weeks helped.

She treats a broad range of orthopedic problems, which at Mesa means everything from a shoulder that will not go overhead to a low back that has been guarding for months. Mesa is also one of the clinics where image-guided procedures are performed in office, so when conservative care has had a fair run and the answer lies elsewhere, that conversation happens in the same building.

The problems she sees most are lower back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, knee pain and sciatica.

In the room

What Physical Therapy here actually involves

The first appointment is an evaluation. Strength, range, control and the movements that reproduce your symptoms get measured rather than estimated, so there is a baseline to judge progress against later. You leave with an explanation of what was found and a small number of things to do between visits, which is the part that does most of the work.

Sessions combine hands-on treatment with loaded exercise, and the exercise progresses as the measurements do. Spinal decompression and dry needling are available where they fit the problem, and pelvic floor physical therapy is offered at selected clinics.

Where Physical Therapy is not the whole answer, Chiropractic, Acupuncture and Pain Management are in the same building and on the same chart, so a change of direction is a conversation rather than a new referral and another wait.

Insurance

Cost and coverage

Most plans cover Physical Therapy, and what varies is the visit limit, the copay and whether your plan wants a referral on file even where the state does not require one. Colorado and Arizona both allow patients to be seen without a physician referral, so the referral question here is a plan question rather than a legal one. In Arizona, AHCCCS is accepted for Pain Management only — not for Physical Therapy, Chiropractic or Acupuncture. Our team verifies your benefits before your first visit so the number is known in advance.

Before you come in

Breanna Valentine — FAQs

Is Brea accepting new patients?

Availability changes from week to week, so the honest answer is to ask. Request an appointment online and say you would like to see Brea, or call the Arizona number and our team will tell you what is open at Mesa. No referral is needed, and our goal is to get you in within the same week.

How will I know whether physical therapy is working?

Because it is measured. Range, strength and the movements that reproduce your symptoms are recorded at the evaluation so there is something to compare against later. If the numbers are not moving after a fair trial, that is a reason to change the plan rather than to book more of the same.

Do I need a referral for physical therapy in Arizona?

Not to be seen here. Arizona allows patients to see a physical therapist without a physician referral. Some insurance plans still want one on file, which is a plan question rather than a legal one, and our team checks it when they verify your benefits.

Where does Brea see patients?

At our Mesa clinic in the East Valley. Physical Therapy, Chiropractic, Acupuncture and Pain Management are all Mountain View Pain Center service lines, so if your care needs to move between them it moves on one chart.

Does AHCCCS cover physical therapy here?

No. In Arizona, AHCCCS is accepted for Pain Management only, not for Physical Therapy, Chiropractic or Acupuncture. Our team will tell you what your own coverage looks like when they verify your benefits before the first visit.

Request an appointment online any time.

Day or night, seven days a week — and we’ll text you back to get you scheduled. No referral is needed, and our goal is to see you within the same week. Arizona scheduling runs through one number for every Arizona clinic: (602) 325-2024.
