About

About Doug Burson

Dr. Doug attended the University of Florida and graduated from Roanoke College in Virginia with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. He went on to complete his Doctorate of Chiropractic from Logan University in Chesterfield, Missouri. Dr. Doug is in the process of completing his Diplomate of the American Board of Chiropractic Internists. Prior to moving out to Colorado Dr. Doug had the honor of being a past treating Chiropractor for the Milwaukee Bucks NBA Team and was the staff Chiropractor for the Kenda Professional Continental Cycling Team. He has also competed on the International level in Long Track Speed Skating and holds a bronze and two silver medals from International competitions in the Masters division. When he’s not in the office, you can often find Dr. Doug out on one of his bicycles, hiking or camping in the mountains or rafting down some Colorado river.

Clinical focus

Knowing when the problem is not a joint

The diplomate Dr. Burson is completing is in chiropractic internal medicine, and it exists because a meaningful share of the people who arrive at a chiropractic office in pain do not have a mechanical problem. Pain that does not change with position, that wakes someone at the same hour every night, that comes with symptoms nowhere near the spine, or that simply does not behave the way a joint behaves, is worth recognizing early. That recognition is a skill, and it is the one he has spent the last several years formally training in.

The rest of his background is at the other end of the spectrum. He has worked with professional basketball and professional cycling athletes, and he has competed internationally himself in Masters long track speed skating. So the range of a normal week for him runs from an athlete looking for a few more efficient degrees of hip extension to a patient whose back pain needs a second opinion about whether it is back pain at all.

The problems he sees most are lower back pain, neck pain, sciatica, herniated discs, headaches and migraines and injuries after a car accident.

In the room

What an adjustment actually involves

Three techniques are used here, and which one you get depends on you rather than on habit. Diversified is the hands-on adjustment most people picture, with the audible release. Drop-table, also called Thompson, uses a table section that drops a short distance so the force needed is much lower. Activator is a small spring-loaded instrument that delivers a single controlled impulse and no twisting at all — which is what makes it the usual choice for someone nervous, someone older, or a joint too irritable to handle more.

Two other things are available alongside: spinal decompression, a motorised traction table used for disc-related leg or arm symptoms, and dry needling for the muscular component that survives the adjustment.

The part that matters most is what happens when Chiropractic is not the answer. Physical Therapy, Pain Management and Acupuncture are in the same building and on the same chart, so a change of direction is a conversation rather than a new referral and another wait.

Insurance and referrals

Seeing Dr. Burson

No referral is needed for Chiropractic, Physical Therapy, Pain Management or Acupuncture, and our goal is to get you in within the same week.

Mountain View Pain Center is contracted with Medicare and with most major commercial plans, and we also work with personal-injury liens and workers’ compensation. Medicare covers spinal manipulation only — not the examination, the modalities or the therapies around it, which are billed separately. Our team can verify your benefits before your first visit.

Before you come in

Doug Burson — FAQs

Is Dr. Burson accepting new patients?

Availability changes from week to week, so the honest answer is to ask. Request an appointment online and say you would like to see Dr. Burson, or call and our team will tell you what is open at Lafayette. No referral is needed, and our goal is to get you in within the same week.

My pain does not seem to change no matter what I do. Is chiropractic still worth trying?

It is worth being examined, which is not the same thing. Pain that does not vary with position or activity is one of the patterns that raises the question of whether the source is mechanical at all, and working that out is a particular interest of Dr. Burson’s. If the answer is no, you are told so and pointed to the right place.

Where does Dr. Burson see patients?

At our Lafayette clinic in Boulder County. Chiropractic, Physical Therapy, Acupuncture and Pain Management are all Mountain View Pain Center service lines, so if your care needs to move between them it moves on one chart.

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor here?

No. Chiropractic at Mountain View Pain Center does not require a referral, and neither do Physical Therapy, Pain Management or Acupuncture. If your own plan requires one, our team will tell you when they verify your benefits.

Does Medicare cover chiropractic care?

Medicare covers spinal manipulation only. The examination, imaging and any therapies performed alongside the adjustment are not covered under Medicare for chiropractic, so our team goes through what is covered and what is not before your first visit rather than after it.

Request an appointment online any time.

Day or night, seven days a week — and we’ll text you back to get you scheduled. No referral is needed, and our goal is to see you within the same week. Colorado scheduling runs through one number for every Colorado clinic: (720) 749-5599.
