About

About Lawrence Elwell

Doctor of Chiropractic: Parker College of Chiropractic, Cum Laude Bachelor of Arts, Psychology: University of California, Riverside Bachelor of Arts, Sociology: University of California, Riverside Dr. Elwell has a passion for helping his patients heal, restore their quality of life and even become better than before. His goal is to fortify his patient’s future health so that they can thrive and kick butt into their nineties. Utilizing both gentle and dynamic Chiropractic techniques including Diversified, Thompson, Activator, posture correction, extremity adjusting, functional movement, Kinesio Taping, soft tissue mobilization, and Dry Needling; Dr. Elwell employs a modern Chiropractic approach to search out and effectively treat root causes of pain and limits. Starting with conservative treatments and coordinating with massage therapists, physical therapists and a medical team to draw from the best tools and fully address patient needs. Outside the office, Dr. Elwell enjoys cycling, hiking, CrossFit and Martial Arts. He can be found exploring Colorado’s outdoors for solitude and spectacular views, and urban Denver’s always changing street art.

Clinical focus

Spines are not the only joints that get adjusted

Shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, wrists and ribs all take load, all lose motion, and all refer pain somewhere other than where the problem sits. Extremity adjusting is a regular part of Dr. Elwell’s practice, which makes him a sensible first appointment when the complaint is a shoulder that will not go overhead or an ankle that never moved properly again after a sprain, rather than a low back.

He is an active patient himself, and he treats a lot of people who intend to keep training: cyclists, lifters, martial artists, and anyone whose plan for their nineties involves doing more than sitting down. The practical consequence is that the conversation is usually about load management rather than rest. What you can keep doing, what to scale back for two weeks, and what has to change in how you move before the same thing happens again.

The problems he sees most are lower back pain, neck pain, sciatica, herniated discs, headaches and migraines and injuries after a car accident.

In the room

What an adjustment actually involves

Three techniques are used here, and which one you get depends on you rather than on habit. Diversified is the hands-on adjustment most people picture, with the audible release. Drop-table, also called Thompson, uses a table section that drops a short distance so the force needed is much lower. Activator is a small spring-loaded instrument that delivers a single controlled impulse and no twisting at all — which is what makes it the usual choice for someone nervous, someone older, or a joint too irritable to handle more.

Two other things are available alongside: spinal decompression, a motorised traction table used for disc-related leg or arm symptoms, and dry needling for the muscular component that survives the adjustment.

The part that matters most is what happens when Chiropractic is not the answer. Physical Therapy, Pain Management and Acupuncture are in the same building and on the same chart, so a change of direction is a conversation rather than a new referral and another wait.

Insurance and referrals

Seeing Dr. Elwell

No referral is needed for Chiropractic, Physical Therapy, Pain Management or Acupuncture, and our goal is to get you in within the same week.

Mountain View Pain Center is contracted with Medicare and with most major commercial plans, and we also work with personal-injury liens and workers’ compensation. Medicare covers spinal manipulation only — not the examination, the modalities or the therapies around it, which are billed separately. Our team can verify your benefits before your first visit.

Before you come in

Lawrence Elwell — FAQs

Is Dr. Elwell accepting new patients?

Availability changes from week to week, so the honest answer is to ask. Request an appointment online and say you would like to see Dr. Elwell, or call and our team will tell you what is open at Highlands Ranch. No referral is needed, and our goal is to get you in within the same week.

Do chiropractors only treat the spine?

Not here. Dr. Elwell adjusts extremities as well, so shoulders, hips, knees, ankles and wrists are all in scope. If a joint has lost motion and the loss is mechanical, it is worth examining whether or not it is attached to your spine.

I train hard and I do not want to be told to stop. Is that realistic?

Usually, yes, with modifications. The conversation is about load rather than rest wherever that is safe: what to keep, what to scale back, and for how long. Where a structure genuinely needs to be unloaded to heal, you will be told that plainly and told why.

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor here?

No. Chiropractic at Mountain View Pain Center does not require a referral, and neither do Physical Therapy, Pain Management or Acupuncture. If your own plan requires one, our team will tell you when they verify your benefits.

Does Medicare cover chiropractic care?

Medicare covers spinal manipulation only. The examination, imaging and any therapies performed alongside the adjustment are not covered under Medicare for chiropractic, so our team goes through what is covered and what is not before your first visit rather than after it.
