Before anything is adjusted you are examined — range of motion, orthopedic testing, and neurological screening when symptoms travel into a limb. The examination sorts your problem into one of several categories that look identical to the patient and are treated completely differently: a restricted joint, a disc under load, a nerve root with genuine neurological compromise, or something that belongs to a different specialty altogether.
Where imaging should come first, we order it rather than adjusting and hoping. Techniques are Diversified manual adjustment, Activator instrument-assisted adjustment where a manual thrust is unwanted or unwise, and drop-table (Thompson) technique, with soft-tissue and myofascial work and home exercise between visits. Spinal decompression and dry needling are available as modalities alongside adjusting.

Two things get confused constantly: a migraine and a headache that comes from the neck. The second starts at the base of the skull, is usually one-sided, worsens through the day and after long drives, and eases when the upper cervical joints are treated. It is one of the most satisfying things to treat because the response is quick and obvious. The examination is built around telling the two apart rather than assuming.
Suburban knees and shoulders mostly hurt for one of two reasons: a sudden increase in load, or a slow loss of range somewhere adjacent that the joint has been quietly compensating for. Both respond to the same sequence — examine, settle the joint if it is too irritable to work with, then rebuild the strength and mechanics that let it tolerate what you want to do. Where a joint needs quieting first, a joint injection can be given here — but it is the start of the plan rather than the plan.
The dividing line worth knowing is whether the pain stays in the back or travels down the leg. Pain that stays put is usually a joint or muscle problem and responds well to manual treatment and a loading program. Highlands Ranch has a lot of seated work, and a lot of driving attached to it. The commonest presentation through this door is not a dramatic injury; it is a neck and upper back that feel fine at nine and are unbearable by mid-afternoon, often with a headache that starts at the base of the skull.
That headache pattern is worth naming, because it is so often treated as migraine for years. Cervicogenic headache comes from the joints and muscles of the upper neck, is reproducible on examination, and responds to manual work and postural correction in a way that migraine does not.
The other half of the caseload is recreational and youth sport — rotational low back pain in young athletes, shoulders that have thrown too much, knees after a growth spurt.
These need examining rather than resting. An overuse injury in a growing athlete that gets labeled as growing pains is the one that comes back years later.
A first visit here is diagnostic. You will be asked what makes it worse, what makes it better, what you have already tried and what happened when you did — then examined, then imaged only if the findings call for it.
That sequence exists because the site of pain and the source of pain are frequently different structures. Treating the site without identifying the source produces relief that expires, which is how people accumulate a history of injections that each worked for a fortnight.
