An adult spine usually shows more than one finding on an MRI: a worn joint here, a bulging disc there. Each is a possible source of pain, and guessing between them wastes time and money.
A block tests one candidate at a time. Numb the joint or nerve under suspicion; if the pain drops clearly for the hours the anaesthetic lasts, that is the source. The plan then treats that and nothing else.
Neck pain that is worse turning to one side, or on looking up, often comes from the facet joints, and medial branch blocks in the neck test that directly. Headaches that start at the back of the head and spread forward may respond to an occipital nerve block.
Arm pain with tingling in particular fingers suggests an irritated nerve root in the neck instead. That is usually treated with an epidural injection rather than a block, and the examination sorts out which it is.
The area can feel numb or heavy for a few hours. Stay with someone for the rest of the day if the block was in the neck, and do not drive if a leg or arm feels weak.
Record your pain every hour while you try the movements that normally provoke it, and bring that record to the follow-up. It is the result of the test, and it decides the next step.
