Leg pain that follows a line down the back of the thigh, and arm pain with pins and needles, are both nerve problems, and they are the ones most often treated as though they were muscle problems. The examination looks for the findings that separate them: where the pain stops, whether reflexes and strength are affected, and whether specific positions reproduce it. When a nerve root is genuinely compressed, a diagnostic block can confirm which level is responsible and relieve it at the same time.
Numbness in the thumb, index and middle fingers that wakes you at night is the classic pattern, and it is worth having examined before it becomes permanent. Not all of it starts at the wrist — a nerve can be irritated at the neck, the shoulder or the elbow and produce hand symptoms, which is why we examine the whole path rather than only the place that tingles.
Most low back pain is mechanical and recovers. The first visit exists to confirm that, rule out the small number of presentations that need something different, and get you moving again on a plan you can actually follow. Where imaging is warranted we can order it from this office.

What treatment looks like
Spine injections and other image-guided procedures are scheduled at the nearest MVPC procedure clinic.
Treatment follows the diagnosis. A diagnostic block numbs one structure at a time, and the response tells us which one is producing the pain before anything longer-lasting is done.
Epidural steroid injections for nerve pain from a herniated or degenerative disc, and for spinal stenosis. Nerve blocks and medial branch blocks for pain arising from the small joints of the spine. Radiofrequency ablation for longer-term relief once medial branch blocks have confirmed the source.
Trigger point injections for myofascial pain that has not released with manual therapy. Joint injections for the shoulder and knee. And spinal cord stimulator trials at Northglenn, Lowry and InterQuest, with the permanent implant at MVSS, our surgery center, where nerve pain has not responded to anything more conservative. These procedures are performed at Northglenn, InterQuest and MVSS, our surgery center, and spine injections are also done at Lowry on scheduled days, while joint injections are given here; evaluation and scheduling happen here in Aurora.

Nerve pain announces itself differently from muscular pain.
