Megan Kern, PA-C — Physician Assistant, Pain Management at Mountain View Pain Center

Megan Kern is a Physician Assistant in Pain Management at Mountain View Pain Center, seeing patients at Lakewood. She played collegiate volleyball, and worked in a podiatry office and a nursing home before medicine — three settings that between them cover most of what goes wrong with how people load their bodies. No referral is needed for Pain Management, Chiropractic, Physical Therapy or Acupuncture, and our goal is to get you in within the same week.

Megan Kern, PA-C
About

About Megan Kern

Grand Valley State University – Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies. Megan Kern is a certified Physician Assistant originally from the Chicago suburbs. She attended Central Michigan University where she received her Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences while also competing on their collegiate volleyball team. She then went on to receive her degree in Master of Physician Assistant Studies at Grand Valley State University. Prior to becoming a PA-C, she worked as a certified nursing assistant in a nursing home and also as a medical assistant in a podiatry office. Her favorite part of being a PA is building strong relationships with her patients and ensuring that each patient feels empowered to take an active role in their health journey. Outside of the office, she enjoys hanging out with friends and family, hiking with her dog Appa, going to concerts and sporting events, and playing volleyball.

Clinical focus

Looking further down than the place that hurts

Megan worked as a medical assistant in a podiatry office before PA school, and podiatry teaches a lesson that transfers directly to pain medicine: a great deal of knee, hip and low back pain is set up further down. How a foot strikes the ground, what shoes someone has been wearing, whether an old ankle injury quietly changed their gait years ago.

It is the reason she will ask about footwear and about what you walk on, which sounds beside the point until it turns out to be the point. Bring the shoes you wear most; wear patterns are informative in a way that nothing you can say about them is.

She also competed on a collegiate volleyball team and worked as a nursing assistant in a nursing home — the jumping-and-landing end of musculoskeletal medicine and the frail-and-complicated end, which is a useful range to have seen.

The conditions she sees are lower back pain, neck pain, sciatica and nerve pain, herniated discs, arthritis and joint pain, hip pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, peripheral neuropathy and headaches and migraines.

What she does

Examination, medication management and the next step

Megan’s visits start with an examination and a diagnosis. Her first job is working out which structure is generating the pain, because that is what decides the plan — and imaging you bring is read alongside the examination rather than in place of it.

Visits cover evaluation, medication management and ongoing pain care. Where an image-guided procedure — epidural steroid injections, nerve blocks, joint injections, trigger point injections and radiofrequency ablation — is the right next step, it is scheduled at Northglenn or Interquest in north Colorado Springs, which are the Colorado clinics where those are performed in office.

Physical Therapy, Chiropractic and Acupuncture are in the same building, so where the answer is rehabilitation rather than a needle it is a handover rather than another referral and another wait.

Megan Kern — FAQs

Is Megan Kern accepting new patients?

Availability changes from week to week, so the honest answer is to ask. Request an appointment online and say you would like to see Megan Kern, or call the Colorado number and our team will tell you what is open at Lakewood. No referral is needed for Pain Management, Chiropractic, Physical Therapy or Acupuncture, and our goal is to get you in within the same week.

Where does Megan Kern see patients?

At our Lakewood clinic. Lakewood is not one of the four clinics where image-guided procedures are performed, so if one turns out to be the right next step it is scheduled at Northglenn or Interquest.

Do I need a referral to see Megan Kern?

No. Pain Management at Mountain View Pain Center does not require a referral, and neither do Chiropractic, Physical Therapy or Acupuncture. If your own plan requires one, our team will tell you when they verify your benefits.

Which insurance is accepted?

Mountain View Pain Center is contracted with Medicare and with most major commercial plans, and we also work with personal-injury liens and workers’ compensation. Our team can verify your benefits before your first visit.

Why would my shoes matter if the pain is in my back?

Because the ground is where load enters the body. A worn-through outer heel, an old ankle injury that changed how you push off, or a job spent on a hard floor in the wrong footwear will all show up somewhere further up the chain, and the back is a common place for it to land. It is not always the explanation, but it is cheap to check and it is missed often enough to be worth asking about.

Request an appointment online any time.

Day or night, seven days a week — and we’ll text you back to get you scheduled. No referral is needed, and our goal is to see you within the same week. Colorado scheduling: (720) 749-5599.
