A thin probe is placed next to the small nerve that carries pain from an arthritic joint in the spine, and a controlled current heats its tip. The nerve stops sending that signal for a long time, often many months, until it slowly regrows.
The joint itself is unchanged. What changes is how much of its ache reaches you, which is often enough to make walking, sleeping and exercise possible again.
Ablation is only offered once the joint has been confirmed as the source, usually with a medial branch block that brings clear, short-lived relief. Some plans require two such tests on different days.
