What it is

Vestibular therapy

Dizziness, vertigo and unsteadiness usually come from the balance system in the inner ear, from the neck, or from the way the two are talking to each other. Vestibular rehabilitation is physical therapy aimed at that system: retraining balance, retraining the eye movements that go with it, and desensitising the positions that set symptoms off.

It is offered across our clinics in Colorado and Arizona.

No referral is needed. Appointments are usually available within the same week.

What it helps

What brings people in

Positional vertigo. The room spins when you roll over in bed or tip your head back. Often the most treatable of the group.

Unsteadiness that has outlasted its cause. After an inner-ear infection, a concussion, or a collision, when the acute problem has settled but balance has not.

Dizziness with a neck problem. Where neck stiffness and dizziness arrived together, the neck is worth examining properly rather than assuming the ear.

Falls and near-falls. Where confidence on stairs or uneven ground has gone, and the fear of falling has started changing how you move.

What the first appointment looks like

History, then testing that reproduces the symptom deliberately so it can be identified rather than guessed at — positional testing, balance testing, and eye-movement testing. Some of it will make you briefly dizzy, and you will be told before it happens.

Where a symptom points somewhere other than the balance system, that is what the examination is for. Chiropractic, pain management and acupuncture are in the same building if the answer turns out to be one of those instead.

FAQs

Do I need a referral for vestibular therapy?

No. A referral is not needed for any of our services.

Which clinics offer it?

It is offered across our clinics in Colorado and Arizona.

How soon can I be seen?

Appointments are usually available within the same week.

Will the testing make me dizzy?

Some of it is designed to reproduce the symptom so it can be identified. You will be told before anything is done.

Is it covered by insurance?

It is billed as physical therapy. Most major insurance is accepted and benefits are checked before the first visit.

Can vertigo come from my neck?

It can. Where neck stiffness and dizziness arrived together the neck is examined properly rather than assumed away.

What if it is not a balance problem?

The examination is there to find that out, and the other services in the same building are there to move to without a new referral.

Do you treat dizziness after a car accident?

Yes, and after a collision we bill auto med-pay directly or hold the lien ourselves.

Dizziness that has outlasted its cause is worth examining properly.

Vestibular therapy is offered across Mountain View Pain Center clinics in Colorado and Arizona — see the full clinic map, Colorado or Arizona.
