Whiplash Treatment

Whiplash Treatment Starts Here

Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a rapid back-and-forth movement of the head and neck—most commonly after a car accident, but it can also occur during sports or a fall. Symptoms can include neck pain, stiffness, headaches, and shoulder/upper back tightness. At Mountain View Pain Center, we help identify what’s driving your symptoms and build a plan to reduce pain, restore motion, and support recovery.

Common Symptoms of Whiplash

  • Neck pain, stiffness, or reduced range of motion

  • Headaches (often starting at the base of the skull)

  • Shoulder or upper back tightness

  • Pain that worsens with movement or prolonged sitting/driving

  • Muscle spasms or “tight” feeling in the neck

  • Dizziness or feeling off-balance

  • Jaw discomfort or facial tension

  • Numbness or tingling into the arm/hand

  • Sleep disruption due to pain

Common Causes and Risk Factors

  • Motor vehicle accidents (rear-end collisions are common)

  • Sports-related impact or sudden stop

  • Falls or sudden jolts to the body

  • Muscle strain and joint irritation in the neck and upper back

  • Ligament sprain and soft tissue irritation

  • Postural changes and guarding after injury

  • Nerve irritation in some cases

  • Stress and reduced sleep can amplify symptoms during recovery

When to Seek Urgent Care
Seek urgent evaluation if you have severe headache with confusion, fainting, new weakness, loss of coordination, vision changes, repeated vomiting, loss of bowel/bladder control, severe unrelenting pain after trauma, fever/chills, or rapidly worsening numbness/tingling.

How We Evaluate Whiplash

Whiplash symptoms can vary from mild to more persistent, so we start by clarifying your injury history and symptom pattern. Your visit may include range-of-motion and movement testing, assessment of muscles and joints in the neck and upper back, posture evaluation, and screening for headache patterns. If symptoms include radiating pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness, we may also perform a basic neurologic screen. We also check for red flags to determine whether imaging or referral is appropriate.

How We Treat Whiplash

At Mountain View Pain Center, our multidisciplinary team combines evidence-based care to reduce pain and restore comfortable motion:

Pain Management

Targeted diagnostic injections and image-guided procedures when appropriate if symptoms overlap with irritated joints or nerve-related pain.

Physical Therapy

Movement-based care to restore neck and upper back mobility, improve strength and stability, and reduce headache/tension patterns.

Chiropractic Care

Hands-on care to support joint mobility and reduce muscle tension, tailored to your symptoms and comfort.

Acupuncture

A natural option to support pain relief and relaxation, often combined with your broader plan.

Treatments We Commonly Recommend

  • Gentle mobility and range-of-motion progression

  • Posture and movement retraining (desk work, driving, sleep positioning)

  • Strengthening for neck, upper back, and shoulder stability

  • Manual therapy to reduce stiffness and muscle tension

  • Headache and tension strategies when appropriate

  • Graded return-to-activity plan

  • Home program to reduce flare-ups and build consistency

Home Care & Quick Relief

  • Ice for 10–15 minutes at a time, especially during flare-ups

  • Gentle movement and short posture breaks (avoid prolonged rigid rest)

  • Avoid sudden high-intensity neck stretching early on

  • Supportive sleep positioning (pillow height that keeps neck neutral)

  • Take movement breaks during driving/desk work

Whiplash FAQs

  • Recovery varies. Some people improve in weeks, while others need a longer, structured plan. Our goal is to reduce pain and restore movement while helping prevent recurring flare-ups.

  • Yes. Neck muscle tension and joint irritation can contribute to headaches, especially those starting at the base of the skull.

  • Not always. If your symptoms or exam suggest imaging would help guide care—or if red flags are present—we’ll recommend the appropriate next step.

  • Most people do best with gentle, guided movement rather than prolonged rest. We’ll help you progress safely based on your symptoms.

  • Many patients benefit from coordinated care—often combining PT, chiropractic care, and acupuncture. Pain management options may be considered when joint or nerve irritation is involved.

  • Often, no. Some insurance plans require a referral or authorization—if you’re unsure, we can help verify.
